Lightning Rod
How Air Terminals work?
Generally, lightning will strike the highest point of any structure or facility.A lightning protection system does not prevent lightning from striking; it provides a means for preventing damage by providing a low resistance path for the discharge of lightning energy. An air terminal is used to capture the lightning strike to a preferred point so that the discharge current can be safely directed by means of a down conductor(s) to the ground. The down conductor provides a low impedance path from the air terminal to the ground so that lightning can be safely conducted to the earth, without causing excessive large voltages
Protective radius through the rolling sphere method
Rolling sphere radius of a conventional air terminal
The rolling sphere radius of conventional air terminals depending on protective levels are shown in IEC 62305-1, and thus the probabilities for the limits of the lightning currents of conventional air terminals are following the table of IEC 62305-1..
Protection level | Radius of Rolling Sphere | Minimum Lighting Current | Probability |
---|---|---|---|
1 | 20 m | 3 kA | 99 % |
2 | 20 m | 5 kA | 97 % |
3 | 30 m | 10 kA | 91 % |
4 | 40 m | 16 kA | 84 % |
